Growing up, one of our favorite meals was Italian sausage sandwiches with onions and peppers, otherwise known as “Carney Food”. You know, cause when you go to the Carnival or Fair they always have the sausage and peppers cart. Plus it’s easier to say “Carny Food” than “Sausage sandwiches with onions and peppers.
- Package Sweet Italian Sausage links
- 1 large sweet onion
- 2 bell peppers
- 1 cup water
- Rolls or hot dog buns
In a large pan, add a few pats of butter over med/med-high heat. Slice onions and add to pan. Cook the onions until they start to get a little soft and add sliced bell peppers. Keep adding butter as needed. Once the onions and peppers are about halfway cooked, reduce the heat down to med/med-low and continue to cook until nice and caramelized.
In a large pan, add a few pats of butter over med/med-high heat. Add sausages and brown on each side. Add 1/2 cup of water and cover pan. Cook until water is gone. Check sausages. If they still need some more time, add another 1/2 cup water.
Place sausage into bun, add onions and peppers. I like to add some American cheese to mine. Enjoy!
